Star Wars: Episode II - Attack of the Clones is the second installment of the Prequel Trilogy, directed by George Lucas and released in May 2002. The story takes place ten years after the events of The Phantom Menace, showing a universe in turmoil: the Galactic Republic is on the brink of collapse while thousands of systems threaten to secede under the leadership of the Confederacy of Independent Systems, led by the charismatic Count Dooku, a former Jedi Knight who has embraced the dark side of the Force.
The main plot follows two intertwined stories that eventually converge. On one hand, we have Anakin Skywalker, now a young Jedi apprentice under the tutelage of Obi-Wan Kenobi, who develops a deep forbidden romance with Senator Padmé Amidala of Naboo. This romance, forbidden by the Jedi Code that prohibits emotional attachments, will be central to the tragedy that will develop in the following episodes.
Simultaneously, Obi-Wan discovers a conspiracy of galactic proportions: there exists a clone army created on the planet Kamino, ordered decades ago by a deceased Jedi Master named Sifo-Dyas. This revelation leads the Jedi to accept the clone army as a tool to defend the Republic, unknowingly fulfilling a master plan orchestrated by Chancellor Palpatine to destroy the Jedi and take total control of the galaxy.
The Battle of Geonosis marks the official beginning of the Clone Wars, a conflict that will last three years and will shape the fate of the galaxy. This epic battle presents the first major confrontation between the Jedi and the battle droids of the Confederacy, establishing the tone for the numerous battles that will follow in this galactic war.
The film was technologically innovative and established the basis for the Clone Wars that would dominate the following episodes of the saga.
